7 Things We Learned from District Conference 2023
On May 10, 2023, over 260 pastors and ministry leaders from across the Alberta and Northwest Territories gathered for a round table for a family forum-styled conference to discuss what it means to "Belong, Grow, and Serve" together in the PAOC family in our region. The day was buzzing as people made new connections, visited with old friends and dialled into the day's agenda. Here are seven things that we learned at this past District Conference:
When you create a safe space for belonging, people respond. Every one of us wants to know two things – that we are loved and needed. Turning from rows to tables and allowing time for deeper connection and voices to be heard gave attendees the feeling that their voices mattered and, in turn, that they mattered.
Everybody's got a story. Each person at the conference shared a story with their table about how they became a part of the PAOC. Words like "Born into it," "Calling," "Encouraged," and "Family" began to emerge as stories were shared around the tables. Our pathways to 'belong' are all different.
We will only become more diverse. There were many calls for increased diversity as we continue to grow. The Canadian landscape reflects ever-increasing diversity, and the PAOC must reflect that diversity.
Connection is the mainstay of this fellowship. The number one reason for credential holders to remain in the fellowship is the relational connections they establish. Our ability to create connection points and help develop relational equity among our 400+ credential holders will be key in moving forward together.
Vanguard College continues to play a vital role in developing leaders. Many conference attendees indicated the continued need for Vanguard College to train and develop leaders and provide ongoing training. There is a vital connection between the Bible College and the mission to reach the 4.4 million souls in our region.
Cohorts and coaching have significantly impacted in the past five years. Most active credential holders in the ABNWT are engaged in either coaching or cohorts. These two avenues provide deepening connections and real-time practical advice on the challenges faced in our modern ministry paradigm.
We are entering into a season of greater fruitfulness. Not only do we see over 60% of our churches growing, but there is a sense of urgency amongst the ministry leaders to reach those not yet a part of the community of faith. When asked, "What are you dreaming for in the next 12 months?" many responded that they were embarking on risk-taking, faith-stepping, and outbound ministry initiatives in their respective communities. Although the PAOC has always gathered creators and innovators, it feels as though there is a heightened desire to do whatever is necessary to reach those far from God.
As we concluded with a time of prayer at our tables, it was evident that the Holy Spirit is working in and amongst this group of people to accomplish His work this coming season. May our hearts be attentive to His prompting, and our hands and feet set out to accomplish His work.
