Why Does Denominational Leadership Matter?
Over the past seven years as a church coach, I’ve worked with a dozen denominations to help revitalize churches in their regions. One thing has become clear: left to themselves, neither churches nor denominations can easily get unstuck. Everyone needs a helping hand.
Denominational leaders play a crucial role—they can either propel churches forward or hinder their ability to fulfill their God-given mandate to “go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:18-20). In my experience, when denominational leaders fully commit to helping churches fulfill the Great Commission, discipleship increases, and churches thrive.
Take the story of the ABNWT District: in 2017, only 12% of churches were growing by reaching lost people. By 2025, that number had risen to 60%. Why? Because of intentional denominational leadership.
1. Denominational Leaders Must Use Their Prophetic Voice
God has given leaders a prophetic voice to call and direct His people toward the future. However, some leaders—out of fear of conflict or resistance—remain silent, prioritizing stability over transformation.
When Pastor Gary Taitinger (ABNWT District Superintendent) spent his first 100 days engaging in appreciative inquiry—asking churches about their greatest challenges—he didn’t just listen. He responded. He boldly called churches back to fruitfulness in the Great Commission. This prophetic call reminded churches of their true purpose: to make disciples.
2. Denominational Leaders Must Rally Churches Around One Big Thing
Churches and ministries often struggle with competing priorities. While many good things demand attention, unless one priority becomes the priority, momentum stalls.
Following his election, Pastor Gary led the district with a singular, unshakable focus: building soul-winning, disciple-making churches. Every aspect of the district’s work—communications, camps, conferences, colleges, church transitions, and coaching—aligned with this mission. This singular focus fueled growth and revitalization.
3. Denominational Leaders Exist to Empower Pastors and Ministry Leaders
A denominational district doesn’t exist for itself—it exists to serve those on the front lines. Its mission is to equip pastors and ministry leaders so they can thrive in their calling.
When districts invest in their leaders—aligning with Ephesians 4 by equipping, mentoring, and resourcing them—the results are eternal. Strong, healthy leaders build strong, growing churches that win souls for Christ.
The Critical Crossroads Ahead
Denominational leadership matters now more than ever. As we stand at a pivotal moment in the ABNWT District, preparing to elect a new superintendent, we must recognize the importance of leadership in shaping the future.
Join us May 6–7 in Calgary as we honour Pastor Gary and Carrie and elect a new district superintendent to continue this mission of reaching 4.9 million souls in the ABNWT region.
