4 ways to make life AWESOME for your staff team
If I know anything about you, I’d say that you want to see your team THRIVE. SUCCEED. ENJOY LIFE & MINSTRY. Why else would you read this article?
I have good news and bad news.
The following principles are simple in theory but more challenging to execute. But you’re here, so I have complete confidence that you’ve got what it takes to make life awesome for your staff team!
1. Trust them.
If they needed a micro-manager, you probably shouldn’t have hired them. But you did. You hired them to do a job.
Give them clear expectations.
Ensure they know how to accomplish what is expected of them.
Give them support so they can ask for help when needed.
Give them grace when they fail (because they will).
TRUST!
2. Include them. Apprentice them.
There are a number of circles of influence that they might not belong in yet; include them anyway. Allow them to be part of your leadership in action. Proximity is a powerful teacher.
One of the complaints I hear is that our incredible young pastors and ministry leaders do not want to step into lead positions. There are myriad reasons for this, but if they are alongside great leaders, they are more likely to become great leaders who are already familiar with the challenges and joys of pastoring from the lead chair.
3. Encourage them.
Please be generous with your words. Speak life.
To their face.
In front of others.
Behind their back.
Your voice matters more than you know.
4. Be honest with them.
I can tell you like this one: “Yes! This is an opportunity to put them in their place!”
If that was your first thought, please resign and relinquish your credentials. Thanks.
However, your team does want to know where they can improve. If you have started trusting, apprenticing, and encouraging, your voice of correction will fall on fertile soil. Don’t make them guess whether they’re hitting the mark. They want to succeed, and you will be an important part of their success or failure. Steward that opportunity well.
Honourable mentions:
Give them opportunities to try new things.
Train them well.
Listen to them.
Care for them.
Thanks for helping to make life awesome for your team!
Here’s a secret—don’t tell them—but your life will be exponentially more awesome if your team is thriving.
I’m honoured to partner with you in helping your young pastors develop into the women and men of God they are created to be. If there is a way I can support you or your team, I would love to hear from you!
